Description

The Spaceship is perhaps the second most recognizable formation at Carter Lake, behind the Scenic Boulder, which everyone knows can plainly be seen from the Fawn Hollow Trailhead. Newcomers get out of their cars and crane there necks up the hillside and - bingo! - spot the Scenic boulder. They then get their gear together and stroll up the main trail wondering what they're looking at (assuming they aren't going to the Scenic Boulder), when - Bingo! - they see the SW Arete of the Spaceship, which, ironically enough, looks just like a Spaceship.

They then usually bust out their guidebook and plot their destination from this obvious feature.

The climbing on the Spaceship is confined to the SW Arete (whose brown and tan coloring and fine edges are the main attraction) and the South face, which is more of the pebble encrusted (and friable) variety of some of the poorer rock at Carter.

Getting There

Leave the Fawn Hollow parking lot and keep left at the first and second splits. You'll stroll slightly uphill and pass a couple boulders, and then a small trail leaves to the right for the Split Boulder. Stay on the main trail and just before reaching a big boulder that blocks the trail, the Spaceship will lift off to your right uphill 20 yards.
