Description

This is the large , slabby cliff at the east end of the town of El Portal.
This area lies outside the park entrance.
Several moderate routes are found here and it can be a nice escape from the Valley on cold days.

Getting There

Park in a turn out below the cliff.

Please be very careful on the approach to not knock rocks into the road. It is very loose so be extra careful and watch your feet.

Do not approach this cliff by scrambling directly up the drainage. The approach follows a faint climber's trail. From the road, start up the trail on the left side of the drainage. Follow this as it switchbacks to the base of the slab.

Do not approach this cliff by scrambling directly up the drainage. The approach follows a faint climber's trail. From the road, start up the trail on the right side of the drainage. Within the first 50ft, cross the drainage and gain the trail on the left side. Follow this as it switchbacks to the base of the slab. Jan 13, 2010
Please be very carefull on the approach to not knock rocks into the road. It is very loose so be extra careful and watch your feet. Also start up on the left side now.

This area burned in the Furguson fire this past summer. Sounds like the approach trail was loose back in 2011, but now it's even looser and will likely wash out completely with the first big rain since it's all powdery, ashy dirt mixed in with loose rocks. Walking around between the routes is now pretty unpleasant because the fire killed all the grass and vegetation that was holding the dirt together. That said the routes are still fun!
