Description

These are two limestone blocks set on a low ridge just above the Firth of Forth and the town of Limekilns. There is a good pub there called the Ship Inn. Access used to be an issue, but has become much easier since the Scottish Rights of Way Act. The area can be breezy and cool, and the climbs are all short, but it is set back in the trees with great views, a short approach, and quick access from Edinburgh for gear climbing. The rock is very interesting; full of fossils.

Getting There

From Edinburgh, take the M90 (A90) across the Forth Road Bridge and exit for the A985 and head towards Stirling and the Kincardine Bridge. Follow the A985 (Admiralty Road) to Dunferminline Rd (signed Limekilns) and turn left. Follow this down into Limekilns, pass along the waterfront and the Ship Inn, to where the road climbs a small hill, passes over some cobbles and bends right. At the next bend (left), look for a small car park on the right, between two buildings and park there. Follow the short well defined path up the drainage through some fences, and after a few yards, out of the drainage and up the embankment. Continue up the trail and pass through the fence, continuing to your right. After a few minutes, you will reach the first block, the second block is another 50 yards or so.
