DescriptionThis is for informational purposes only. Last time I was here was in the late 90's and the police showed up and we very nearly got busted. My friend climbed here a few weeks later and he and his friends got caught. The cops made them stack rocks and bricks in front of the cut fence for several hours and finally let them go. This was probably because none of them were 18 that they didn't get into more trouble.
In short: DON'T CLIMB HERE!!
The Silo is an abandoned (grain?) silo outside of Sand Springs just a bit further than where Avery Drive ends. It has (had?) a two pitch bolted sport climb that starts in the right tower and finishes on top of the central tower. It also had epoxied real rocks glued to the outside back wall as a long traverse. Someone had cut a large hole out of the back fence to allow access. This is coming from a clouded memory so please excuse any mistakes.
Pitch 1: inside right tower, follows bolts up the silo wall. The holds have been chissled out and I remember them being pretty reachy for me, but I was 15.
Pitch 2: Once on top of the first silo the route continued up the outside wall of the central silo. This pitch was shorter if I recall correctly.
I seem to remember doing two single rope raps back into the silo. Both pitches may be able to be linked, not sure.
The Silo is still there, but I'm not sure if the climbing routes are.
Closed. Trespassers will be arrested. Details
Getting ThereFrom Chandler Park: Drive West on Avery Drive towards Sand Springs. At the end of Avery, continue in the same cardinal direction. You get spit out by the freeway entrance and have to take a right to stay on the road hugging the river (turns into highway 51). Keep next to the railroad tracks and don't cross the river. Very quickly after this right, you'll see the silo on the left side of the road a couple hundred yards down from a gas station. I marked it specifically on the map. We parked at the gas station to avoid the law noticing us.
