The Tramway

California > San Jacinto Mountains
Access Issue: Remember to fill out a wilderness permit, even if climbing for the day! Details

Description

The Tramway - so named due to most climbers using the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to reach this bouldering area. The granite boulders here are scattered not too far from the Tramway station near the peak of Mt San Jacinto. The climbing style can be best described as "steep".

Primarily a summer destination to escape the Southern California summer heat, the primary downside to this area is the cost. As of 2018, the cost for using the Aerial Tramway to get to the boulders is $25.95 per adult for the day. Other passes are available. Visit their official website for more details.

Remember to fill out a wilderness permit, even if climbing for the day! Permits can be acquired at the ranger station on the way to the boulders from the upper Tramway station.

Getting There

The following is from the Aerial Tramway website:

Traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 exit Highway 111 to Palm Springs, travel
8 miles to the first signal and turn right at Tramway Road. The Valley Station is located approximately 4 miles up Tramway Road.

Traveling from San Diego take Interstate 15 North to Interstate 215 North to
Highway 60 East to Interstate 10 East. Exit Highway 111 to Palm Springs.
Turn right on Tramway Road. The Valley Station is located approximately 4 miles
up Tramway Road.

Maps and directions are found on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway website hiking page.

[Hide Comment] Hey Smith, thanks for that update - Keep on 'em!!! Most new climbers there simply don't know how to act in the outdoors, its not that they don't care (mostly), they just need to be educated on climbing ethics and whats acceptable at Trammy!

I once ran into a dood there that thought it would be wrong to clean off ticks, acting like it was a disservice to boulderers, because they would need them to figure out how to climb the problems. Apr 27, 2013
