Description

A small canyon filled with grass and palm trees down near the border in Otay mesa contains some decent if somewhat short sport climbing on interesting featured metamorphic rock. Most of the good climbing faces north, and the trees offer shade, making this area climbable on all but the hottest days.

Getting There

From highway 5 go east on 905. Continue east on Otay Mesa Road. Turn left on Alta Rd and drive 2 miles, passing a prison, to an unmarked dirt rd on left with a concrete culvert. Go north on this rough dirt rd. At a fork near a fenced reservoir, bear right and follow this rd til it ends above a canyon. Hike left and down into the canyon to find the climbing.

This area is experiencing EXTREME access issues. This is a favorite spot for illegals entering the country and is heavily patrolled by border agents. Helicopter fly-bys and border agents on ATVs with unholstered handguns is now the current state of sport climbing in Otay. Climbing is prohibited as posted on the signage above the cliff, and the routes are really not even worth the hassle. Rusted cold shut bolts? We should send Mr. Messier to Otay for all his bolt chopping pleasure! Jan 31, 2007

That's a shame to hear. Although I haven't been to Otay in years, it was always a nice place to take some noobs, or just spend a day playing around. No matter what the scorching temperature, the climbing in Otay was always well protected from the heat, by the tight canyon walls and abundance of flora. Jan 27, 2008
dont follow old directions. go 805 south to olympic prkw. east about 5 miles. go south at arco olympic training center. park at southernmost point at park by kids playground. hike south past dirt lot with green metal gazebo on marked trail. crag is easily visible on canyon rim. hike down steep hill and cross bamboo to crags. have not been caught by border patrol myself. just dont park above crag please. nice little gem we have. dont get it shut down, thx Mar 27, 2011

Gear Taken from the Crag:

This past week someone took an anchor I left setup on the south wall, east side. We had an injury and were forced to leave the crag immediately. I planned to come back asap and retrieve the top rope anchor.

If you took it, or know who did I would greatly appreciate the gear back. This is a locals crag, and we enjoy being able to leave the occasional bail biner or draws on the wall without worrying about gym rats snatching booty. We also put in a lot of effort annually to clean the crag and establish decent trails to the routes.

Gear included:
-1 x Red/Yellow cordelette 30ft - 8mm
-2 x Locking carabiners - black diamond with green locker
-2 x Locking oval carabiners - black diamond with blue locker

On a more positive note, any San Diego climbers who want to get outside and have some fun this winter feel free to contact me.
