Description

Flakeview is a popular area, with a number of good moderate routes as well as some hard bolted lines. It features both face climbs and good slab climbing.

Getting There

Going up the road/trail from the parking pulloff, fork to the left and continue up a fairly steep trail to a large boulder on your left (the Trailside Boulder). Continue another quarter mile or so to the cliffline of Screamweaver Area; go left to get to Flakeview.

So I am going to give Flakeview the benefit of the doubt that its awesome and that we just had trouble getting there but having said that the approach sucked and is very down-played in the directions to get there.
We followed the directions the best we could, both on here and in the selected climbs in NC guidebook, they are very similar. after going up and down the mail trail multiple times (we passed the trailside boulder and everything) we found the closest thing we could to a trail matching the description of being .2 milesfrom the trailside boulder and heading up the hill. this quickly turned into scrambling and bushwhacking with no "trail" anywhere to be seen. we got to the base of the mountain proper and continued left (west) until we figured out we were under lakeview. we did more trailblazing until we finally found flakeview. we burned up most of the morning trying to find this place and at least 45 minutes of trailblazing/bushwhacking/scrambling. once we got there we got on bear cub which if you blow getting to the first clip youre in for a really bad time going down the gully and taking your belayer with unless they are anchored in. add on the nice long run-outs and it was closer to a 5.9 in our book.
maybe we are just Pennsylvania softies but everything about this place seems down-played and strong man sandbagged. overall we did not enjoy our visit and the approach alone and lack of clear directions made us want to leave after 1 climb. Oct 10, 2017

Not sure, but I think the trail intersections have changed a bit since the park completed the new section (the large wide portion leading to the boulderfield) last year. Too bad you guys didn't get on "Lakeview" instead - it's one of the best routes at the Bald. Oct 10, 2017

I have not been there much in last couple years but I assume the fire last year may have done some damage to the smaller "trails". Nov 3, 2017
