Description

Stewart Pocket is a nice area with good climbing on mostly solid granite in a scenic location near Payson, AZ. It is fairly undeveloped, so there are a lot of potential FA's waiting to be done.

Getting There

From the Beeline Highway & 260 intersection in Payson, take 260 east for about 1/2 mile and turn right onto Granite Dells Rd. Follow it roughly south for 1.2 miles paved, then continue on a dirt road for another 2.4 miles" until the road ends at a just before a large wash. Proceed south to the dozens of rock formations across the wash.

The road ends 1/4 mile before the ranch and big wash. The so-called "Stewart Peak" crag is not visible from this point. I say so-called because it is not marked on the USGS topo map. Sep 3, 2012

Good point Larry it isn't on the map. It is a simple name for the granite dome on the west edge of the pocket. Something I just called it.

The road closure is relatively new. Nice to keep the area from further degradation. Nov 12, 2012

Having explored this area a bit, I think it'd be great to have a map view -- like a Google Earth screen shot -- posted showing all these random different areas marked. Would help navigation a lot. Thanks Manny! Jun 8, 2016

Can anyone comment on camping in this area? - I would be willing to hike in if necessary/allowed. I am also curious about how dog friendly the approaches are. Thanks! Nov 19, 2018
We camp at the East side parking area all the time with no issues. It's not the cleanest of areas but it works and there are a few nice camping sites back in the trees. All of the approaches that I have been on are dog friendly. Nov 19, 2018
