June 1st, 2017:The Salt Lake Climbers Alliance (SLCA), the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and Access Fund announce the signing of an unprecedented lease for 140 acres in Little Cottonwood Canyon (LCC). The parcel, known as the Gate Buttress, is about one mile up LCC canyon and has been popular with generations of climbers because of its world-class granite.
The agreement secures legitimate access to approximately 588 routes and 138 boulder problems at the Gate Buttress for rock climbers, who will be active stewards of the property. The recreational lease is the result of several years of negotiations between LDS Church leaders and the local climbing community.
Access Note: The climbs on the Church Buttress above the vault as well as the Glen boulders that have been traditionally closed will remain closed.
Please help us steward this area and leave no trace.

**FRAGILE RIPARIAN AREA -- APPROACH CONSIDERATIONS/BEST PRACTICES**
The excellent, highly-concentrated bouldering that White Pine South offers during the warmer months has drawn an increasing amount of boulderers year after year. This increase in popularity has created a spiderweb network of user-created trails along the south side of the riverbank. In turn, substantial erosion and loss of vegetation has occurred along the south side of the creek.
What's more, the runoff from the incredible snow year of 2022/2023 had all but demolished the OG crossing directly across the parking lot, and a new crossing has been created roughly 30 yards upstream. This new crossing has broadened foot traffic further along the south side of the riverbank and has only exacerbated the impacts on this fragile, sub-alpine riparian ecosystem.
When approaching the talus field in White Pine South, please exercise caution and be mindful of your footprint.
- IF THE CREEK IS RUNNING LOW -- please cross the creek directly south of the parking lot. From there, follow the well-established trails to either Party Pit and the Warm-up Area. AVOID STEPPING OFF TRAIL.
- IF THE CREEK IS RUNNING HIGH -- use the new upstream crossing, but please use the existing trail that trends generally SW toward the talus field. AVOID CREATING NEW TRAILS, OR STEPPING OFF OF THE EXISTING ONES.
Let's ensure that White Pine South retains its sub-alpine splendor for future generations!
