  • Named for Alan Shepard, the first American to go into space, in 1961.
A fun outing. A good option is to ride mountain bikes out the gated road from behind Lower Bridge Campground, making for a quick and scenic 6 miles along the river. Pack light, a 35m rope will suffice for all the routes. To locate the tower, look for two plywood picnic tables on the right side of the road. It's in a broad flat area and if the tables are gone, you will then come to a junction with a private road branching left. From the tables, walk back (upstream) about 200 feet, then head straight up the hill for no more than 10 minutes. The tower is on the downhill edge of a large open area near the ridgeline. Bring some beers and watch for eagles and osprey cruising the canyon! Oct 28, 2017

[Hide Comment] Tower Update. We've hidden a wire brush in the chimney on the uphill side of the tower near the route Siege Tower.

Lots of new route development out here, so the new routes might have some loose rock/moss still. They have all been cleaned extensively during the first ascents, but many have not yet been repeated by more than a few people. Several of the new routes need a longer rope (50m), with Jenga's Revenge, and Crack of Noon both needing a 60m to top rope or lower. But a 35 m rope is still sufficient if you want to TOP OUT each route and rappel off one of the shorter climbs. Currently routes Hyrule and Siege Tower are equipped with mussy hooks (please do not TR off these, just use them to lower), with plans to outfit Storming the Castle and Burma Shave in the near future.

There is also a decent trail up. Head straight back behind the lemonade stand for about 50m to pick up the trail that head slightly up and right. The trail gets better as you climb toward the tower. Aug 8, 2020
[Hide Comment] As of 6/9/2022 the gate to the tower is closed. I’m not sure if this is a temporary closure but if someone has information about when the road is open it would be helpful. Jun 9, 2022
