Description
The Boneyard is a great mid-mountain destination. A good spot for the climbers who are looking for more feature climbing (corners, aretes, roofs and slabs) rather than the crimp and crank climbing so often found on Mount Lemmon. You can climb there from early spring to early fall depending on your tolerance for cold. You can also escape the heat of summer but don't get there early. The wall is sunny in the morning and unless it is in the 80s or cloudy wait until after 11:30 when the right side starts getting shade. It is also close enough to the road that if a monsoon shower drenches you it isn't hard to get back to the car. Bring a 70M rope and tie a knot in the end. Many routes are very long. You can easily get 1000 feet of 5.10 climbing in if you can climb 5.10 quickly. There are so many quality sport routes here, from 5.8 to 5.12- most teams will find routes for either climbers skill level. A number of new routes and long extensions have been added to the cliff since 2025. These routes can be a little dirty but are cleaning up with more ascents. A good rule of thumb is that if the lichen is thick you are off route. The area shares an approach with the popular Ridgeline crag and can be a welcome haven from the crowded gym-like atmosphere that can occur in some areas.
Getting There
Park on the right pullout at milepost ~18.5 next to a quarry of white rock. Don't get too discouraged when you see 4-6 cars in this area as most of the climbers are likely at Ridgeline. The trail for both areas begins up a steep slope at the upper end of the lot. As you work your way up the drainage wash take care not to slip on polished slabs. The hike reaches a saddle intersection and breaks off to the right and to the left. Take the right trail to the base of the climbs. The approach should take approximately 15 minutes.
