Details
Description
A small hill set apart from the ridge, this is the most logical place to park for most of the western areas of Pena Blanca.
There are multitudes of boulder problems all the way around this formation. There are also some tantalizingly steep faces, but they are pretty chossy. Many of the boulder problems also are on delicate rock and having holds break is all part of the fun.
Area highlights include: the Puff Boulder, The Rave Cave, and Dark Roof a reported V10 roof crack.
Getting There
The Volcano is easy to recognize as you are driving to the area. There will be a large parking area directly off the road on the left, which is now the main parking for the Volcano, though there is also a possibly closer circular parking lot about a mile further down the road. The previous access via the road from the parking to the Volcano is now closed to vehicular traffic, but is now the main hike in. Expect about a 30min approach now.
PREVIOUS DIRECTIONS: Right after a large parking area on the left, there is a dirt track that leads directly to the Volcano. High clearance advisable. Without 4WD you can still make it almost to the Volcano: when you are almost there, you'll pass a pull-off on the right (east) right before a steep/rutted hill. 4WD is almost certainly needed to get back up this bad section of rd, so unless you have that, park here. 100ft beyond this pull-off is a large parking area on the west flank of the Volcano.
