Section 13

Minnesota > Lake County Rd 6 Area…

Description

A north-facing ~60ft bluff with a choice of clean cracks and slabs. The anorthosite rock is different than that of Palisade Head and feels more like granite. The routes are accessed by rapping off from the top.

The approach trail leads straight to the clifftop with a very nice vista of the forrested surroundings. Section 13 is a good and desolate alternative on crowded days at Palisade and Shovel Point.

Getting There

From Highway 61 turn into County Road 6. Drive for 2 miles at which point you should see a Superior Hiking Trail
Superior Hiking Trail parking lot. 2 miles along County Rd. 6. Park the car here for Section 13.
(gravel pit) on the right. If you see the cemetary on the right, you've driven too far. Leave the car at the parking lot and walk another ~100 yards along County Rd. 6 towards the
Superior Hiking Trail trailhead for Section 13.
. One mile hike leads directly to the top of Section 13 cliffs.

[Hide Comment] Is there a reason there are no directions here? Jun 24, 2010
[Hide Comment] Nick -- if you know the directions and are willing to provide them, I could re-assign this to you. Let me know. Jun 24, 2010

[Hide Comment] Went for a trip up to the Head and found it very busy. Figured we would check out section 13... You people can have the head. The climbing here is great. The only down fall is the mile hike in, but it was way worth it. There is also a nice little camping spot about 60yds down the trail. Would be great for an overnight weekend of climbing. The parking area leaves a little to be desired as well. Also for a major hiking trail it is not very well marked.

[Hide Comment] Directions are included in the Falcon guide and a summary is as follows: Park at the Superior Hiking Trail parking lot on Hwy 6. Walk north and look for the SHT sign on your right, follow the trail north.

After an initial "summit" descend, pass a spur trial, then up a final climb to a great view. Climbing is to your left. 30 minute hike.

Rap onto the start ledge or belay from the top. Jul 19, 2010
[Hide Comment] 30 min if you are booking it...45min with a full pack is closer to reality Jul 19, 2010
