Description
The cliff bands below Sunshine Wall hold over a hundred sport climbs from 5.7 to 5.12a. Everything from the east boundary of the Riverview Area to the blank hillside below the Kotick plateau is contained here. All the sectors but M&M Wall are on basalt entablature, an unpredictable flow of lava often with exciting gas pockets at the top. The final wall is on a lower columnar section - blank, vertical segments with pockets and edges. The average difficulty of the walls increases from west to east though you'll find moderates and test pieces at every cliff. Mostly, Sunshine's lower cliffs are an excellent place to get in many 5.10/5.11 pitches or to try the various test pieces such as Extra Value Meal, Hang Over Hang, Little Stinker, Effortless, or the Coulee's first 5.12, Stemmin' Ms.
Getting There
Begin from the main parking lot and head up over the mesa overlooking Echo Basin. The simplest route will be to take Gully #1 through the slot canyon and down to the east end of Sunshine Wall. From here, a path leads directly downhill to Fat Man, Skinny Man and M&M crags. For the others, simply continue east along the base of Sunshine - at every point a trail leads downhill, it will be to another one of the lower cliffs, until Sunshine begins to peter out and the entablature becomes the Riverview area.
