The largest "cave" on this route is now closed! The closure area is small, in the middle of nowhere, and easily bypassed.
Description
Rising out of Bear Canyon are the crags "Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum" as in the Jack in the Beanstalk nursury rhyme. There is one more crag in the line, and this crag became known as "Dum". The summit of Dum is a cool place to hang out, it is an enormous flat boulder somehow lodged 200' SE of the summit of Dinosaur Mountain. It is nearly as high as Dinosaur Mountain and has a better view to the east.
Near the summits of Dum and Dinosaur Mountain, you will run into Flatiron Closure signs (2002). Although this crag is not listed as closed in the open space web site, I believe the North Ridge of Dinosaur Mountain is closed and this may include the summit of Dum.
Getting There
Follow the Mallory Cave trail past the cave and up to the col west of the Box. At this point Fum is just south of you, and Dum is NW. The trail continues (less distictly) up a steep section to the col between Fum and Dum (this is the easiest way to the summit of Dinosaur Mountain). Alternatively, it is perhaps easier to reach the base of the east face of Dum from the Porch Alley Trail. The base of this face is only 100' south of the SW corner of the Back Porch.
