Description

The Tombstone Wall/Leaning Tower area is located near the western end of the East Rampart cliff. The rocks here are shorter and are often used for bouldering. Just to the west of the Leaning Tower is the Leaning Tower Gully, a major access route for getting to the base of the cliff.

Getting There

To find the Leaning Tower/Tombstone Wall formations hike up the CCC trail and turn right at Pedestal Buttress, heading up and around the east end. Once around D'Arcy's Buttress head west along the top of the cliff. After a few minutes of walking you will see a good-sized tower to your left and a 20-ft high wall to your right. You're there.

Wow! How new are you guys or new to Devil's Lake? Leaning Tower is old (but still good ) news. I haven't climbed the harder side of this little rock, but I know there are a number of good routes starting at 5.4 to 5.11 (not sure about the 5.11). I draw from memory, but I think the access for toprope is on the nw corner. A creepy exposed little climb (no free-soloist me) to a chunky eyebolt smack in the middle of the rock. Reasonable anchor placements, as I recall, with small nuts or stoppers. Don't rely on swiveling your rope all over the tower anchored to the eyebolt alone. There are great climbs for beginners on the outer, cliff side with a great view of the expanse of the park. On the trail side, there's a few harder climbs. (succeeded on that side but once).
