Description

The Red Rocks formation straddles the Potholes Trail about 3/4 of the way up the bluff. The formation contains a dozen moderate climbs, the highest of which is about 25 feet high.

Getting There

To get to the Red Rocks park at the South Shore parking lot and take the paved path north across the railroad tracks. When you get to the junction of the Balanced Rock Trail and the Grottos Trail, turn right and take the Grottos Trail. After 10 minutes of easy walking turn left and head up the rock steps of the Potholes Trail. Climb the steps for 15-20 minutes until you pass through a tower and a wall. You're there.

Stettner's Rocks and Misery Rocks are both probably better for kids. Apr 9, 2016

I took my grandkids here on a cool early spring day, thinking there wouldn't be much hiker traffic. I was wrong. Most of the climbs have to be belayed from right next to the hiker trail, so things can get congested just about any time of the year. The Southwest Dihedral is the one climb mentioned here that is on the tower and can be belayed from well away from the hiker trail. Apr 8, 2016

I wish there was a little more beta on this spot. I remember walking through the potholes doorway looking left and looking right thinking these were some quality lines. Also they looked harder than those described in this area lol. Sep 30, 2011
