Access Issue: Climbing Regulations/Seasonal Raptor Closures Details

The Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent's Compendium states that:
1. Vegetation is not allowed to be used as an anchor.
2. Only neutral or rock colored bolt hangers are allowed.

Description

This south-facing formation has a handful of cracks and bolted face climbs. This cliff is generally warm on chilly days.

The formation and many of the routes were named after a funny event involving a famous visiting climber and a local. The visiting climber was invited over to the local's house for dinner and to use the hot tub. Several days later, the visiting climber re-appeared in Hidden Valley, not particularly well-rested, but with a smile on their face.

Getting There

This cliff faces Quail Springs Road/Park Boulevard and is located just west of Hidden Valley Campground and Intersection Rock. The Hot Tub is the west and south-facing aspect of the same rock inside Steve Canyon that has Super Roof. The next formation left (west) of the Hot Tub is the Cereal Cliff.

Walk from Hidden Valley Campground or park in the first pullout west of Intersection Rock parking lot. From this pullout, a marked access trail leads to the base of Watanabe Wall.

For routes on the west and south faces, you'll need to walk left (west) along the base of the cliff. For routes on the narrower SW face, you'll have to scramble up into the hanging valley between the Hot Tub and Watanabe Wall.
