With a compact AWD vehicle like a Subaru CrossTrek or Jeep Wrangler, or mountain bikes, you can cut the approach in half by driving the overgrown road to its terminus at a steel gate (otherwise park at the Soda Springs Trailhead and walk the road). From the gate the hike is an easy 1.2 miles/half hour. Immediately after crossing the second foot bridge, by several huge fallen trees, leave the trail and ascend a steep ridge for 50' until intersecting a good climber's path that switchbacks through the trees and up the hillside to the base of the Old Man Spire. Beware poison oak and ticks.
