approach for routes on Calico Peak and Tank Peak. Non-climbers in the group can enjoy a great outing by stopping at the "tank" (tinaja) for which the Pass is named -- big seasonal pond / basin fed by rain-water, a short ways NW below (and before) the Pass. Mostly obvious well-beaten track. Starts north from Sandstone Quarry parking on the Loop road, next curves NE and E into base of valley. Then long SE up valley, mainly along its SW to reach the pass between Calico Peak and Tank Peak -- (nice to take a break on rock in middle of pass before starting to climb a route up one of the peaks).
