Lower Green River Lake with Squaretop in backgroun...

Description

The Green River area is a long and winding river valley that drains several major glaciers (including Mammoth, Minor, & Stroud) located on the northwestern slopes of the Wind River range. Melt water from the Green makes its long journey past the Upper and Lower Green River Lakes and eventually, hundreds of miles south mixes with the waters of the Colorado River.

The Green River area is a lesser Wind River climbing destination, primarily because of the longer approach it takes to reach more sought after climbing areas such as Dinwoody Glacier and Titcomb Basin. Despite its out of the way location the Green River hosts a few formations worthy of climbers efforts, and one mountain in particular that symbolizes the Wind River Range- Squaretop.

Note: Please feel free to add any information, photos, trip reports, new routes for this area.

Getting There

Take 191 west 6 miles from Pinedale, turn right at sign for Cora and Green River Lakes (WY-352), follow this paved road approximately 20 miles until pavement runs out, than keep following dirt road for 19 miles until you reach the Green River campground and trailhead. The Highline trail (also the CDT) begins at the Lower Green River Lake and takes you up the Green River valley past the Upper Green Lake, Squaretop and on to the high peaks.
