Looking south from Haystack toward Deep Lake

Description

A beautiful area that is near Cirque of the Towers so it's a good addition if you have the time. There are several peaks for climbing, but it seems that Haystack has the most routes.

Probably less crowded than the cirque if you want seclusion. Mosquitoes can be nasty--bring some repellant.

Getting There

Approach as for the Cirque, but at Big Sandy Lake, keep going along the NE side of the lake to a trail that heads up toward Clear Lake and then Deep Lake. The camping at Clear Lake offers some nice trees and looks preferrable to the Deep Lake site that is above treeline.

Move climber's right and follow twin 5.7 cracks to a notch or shoulder.P3. Move climber's right again and begin to "tunnel." This is where the climb gets crazy. You are in the Great North Chimney. Basically, there is a detached piece of granite (about the size of two football fields) that you climb through. I thought it f...[more]   Browse More Classics in WY
