Where to climb in NC Thursday after the rain?

Hi, I am driving to climb in North Carolina for 10 days or so and will arrive Wednesday night. Which climbing areas do you believe will be dry this Thursday, October 29th with the heavy rain expected on Tuesday and Wednesday? I am hoping to climb trad at Stone Mountain, Moore's wall, Looking glass, Linville Gorge, Ship Rock, RUmbling Bald or Laurel Knob and can climb up to 5.10. Thanks, Sebastien

Stone mountain dries almost instantly but it's probably going to be a little warm there since it faces due south. Most of the other places you mentioned will have some dry routes but a lot of wet ones as well.

Thanks Emil. Will it be mainly the slabs climbs that will be dry? Or even the great arch and fantastic? And what about water streaks?

North side of Looking Glass can stay dry after rain, too.

The faces at Laurel dry quickly, but the grooves do not. Cereal Wall and Flakeview/Flappin' area at Rumbling dry quick. Moore's can dry quick since it is so steep. Looking Glass has a tendency to seep, unless it is one of the few steep north side routes or the Nose. A few of the 10's dry quick at the north side, but don't expect any moderates to be dry. The very bottom of the Nose routes can stay a little damp, but if you push through, the upper sections will be dry. Ship Rock dries fast and much of the gorge. Shortoff dries very quick, except for the decent gully.

It's mostly the slabs at Stone that will dry instantly but there isn't much there that isn't slab! The Great Arch might be a little wet in spots but it's so mellow that shouldn't matter. Fantastic will be wet in the morning but will mostly dry off by the afternoon. You really don't want to climb Fantastic if there is any water on it though. The first pitch has a sizeable runout to the anchors on slick polished rock and you're looking at a huge fall if you slip.

Tom is correct that Ship Rock dries quickly but it's Northwest facing and at almost 5000 feet elevation so it will probably be pretty chilly there.

If it just stopped raining I would go to Ship or Shortoff. We climbed at Shortoff a couple of weekends ago after it had rained for several days and the entire night before. On the rock at 9AM and it was perfectly dry even as the gorge was filled with fog. If you decide to take the rap to avoid the lower and wettest part of the decent gully take some webbing. It was in bad shape two weeks ago.

Shortoff ought to be perfect on Thursday if nothing changes with the weather.

Thank you all for the responses. It will help a lot to plan my trip in North Carolina.
