| I notice I do that on really hard stuff that's overhanging. I think I purse my lips and try to hold my breath to maintain body tension so I get a pssss and then when I get the hold and breath again I let out an aaah. psss+aaah= psssaaah Other than that I'm usually pretty quiet. | FLAG |

| I usually start making a lot of noise when I'm loosing my grip or when I'm about to fall. I guess its kind of like a stress reliever or something. But the whole breathing and yelling thing in power/power-endurance sports does seem to be pretty common as well as effective | FLAG |

| I find that my prayer life gets stronger at the crux, especially when I look down and see the run-out I created. It is amazing how much further the run-out looks when on the verge of falling! | FLAG |

| I think the chalk blowing came from the French not Sharma. There is def. pictures that pre date Chris. making quick bursts of noise actually allows you to climb stronger. Not the noise but the rapid relief of air. (That is why breathing subs.) But it is harder to focus on breathing out fast for some? | FLAG |

| A trampoline/ariel acrobat for Cirque Du Soleil once told me when we were out climbing that breathing techniques are very critical to pulling through difficult moves. She would know, being an amazing athlete, and performer, who hangs around a lot of other great athletes in her profession. I bet many of us could climb/lead stronger if we could figure out this breathing trick. | FLAG |

| mattm wrote: Yelling like that when exerting max effort in short powerful bursts has been around for eons in sports. Watch athletes throwing a discus or shot put in track and field or power lifters. I did it all the time as a Decathlete (mainly shot put). I do it on power moves like you describe. Let's off pressure in the lungs. Try this. Go throw something heavy as far as you can and don't make a sound. then do it and let out the "yelp". Which feels better? Women's tennis. One of the reasons why this is my favorite sport to watch! | FLAG |

| Best "Pizzatt.." exhale story I have is the two dudes (excuse me if you know who you are because I don't know you) climbing Blind Faith in Eldo for 4 hours! Clearly crack was not their bag (much like face climbing is not mine) - there were a lot of pizzzatts to be had - and additional comments like "f*** this crack". They lowered after valiant efforts and we climbed and cleaned their gear for them. I know someone will return said favor when I get ousted on a sport climb. I have been accused of "sounding like the cheap hotel I stayed in last night". And I do usually push air out through my teeth to prep my abs on hard moves. | FLAG |

| The Bzzaaat Cafe, outdoor seating has a high chance of spray. Bring an umbrella. I don't climb hard enough to develop a really good grunt. I notice my grunt factor goes up when I'm tired too, not ideal forming factors for a really well-enunciated BZAAAAT! | FLAG |

| here in humboldt making animal noises seems to be a growing trend. some have theorized that ANYTHING can be climbed, free, with the right animal noises in the right sequence. who knows, maybe they're onto something! ...or just high. i find the urge to make noise while pulling a tough move pretty darn difficult to hold back, but i still try. usually all that comes out is a crisp short "PSSSST!" of course, when i fall off something that should be easy the frustrated and angry "gaaaah!" groan is inevitable | FLAG |
