What the shit is happening at Black Mountain?

We haven't been to Black for about 2 years due to babies and business but made it up there this weekend. I was appalled at the conditions. There were cigarette butts everywhere, landings had been modified, tick marks outnumbered trees and we even saw a group of climbers leave a burning fire to go watch the sunset (which resulted in a ranger getting on his loudspeaker to call them back). The Big Greenie has had the roots removed from it's base and the once sloped landing is totally flat. Seriously what the fuck is going on up there?

If people can't behave properly and not alter the landscape we are going to slowly lose our rights to access these wonderful gems of nature.

People are morons.

It is our destiny, unfortunately.

I also don't know where that is.

Sounds like it's mostly just littering and vandalism. I.e. the fastest way to get bouldering/climbing banned, with the added bonus of making the whole area unsightly for everyone. Don't "chill"; pick up your shit.

Sounds like Los Angeles is taking over. Before you know it it'll just be another sprawling ghetto-suburban neighborhood.

Remember the guide book came out not to long ago. Once all the gym folks got a hold of it and didn't get taught the proper ethics of things, this is what happens.

Keep having abandoned camp fires and you might be surprised how fast you can loose your rights.... Black Mt. is a tinder box.

as an avid eco terrorist this information delights me. I shall break some branches as I walk down a trail today to celebrate the actions of these californian prisoners

Is it just me and my Boulder sensitivities or is Andrew's "I hate nature" shtick one of the stupidest, least funny personas in a long time?

Yes, not funny & YES Stupid,
It is not just your Boulderite sensibilities,
Some distinguished members of the forum & I , ;~> , have noticed too!

Can it be serious?. . . Or . . .it can not be serious ! . . .or WTF is that for serious?

So often sarcasm . . if it is that? does not transfer across the Internet .( this is not Satire )

Repeating it for affect, leads, in effect, to highlighting the banality of the poster.
.
It WANTZ to be noticed,

if you check some east coast thread, titled "Community" or some such,
That poster, "Andrew Wood"? Kinda doubled down when only circumspectly
acknowledged,

So I have chosen to ignor the troll,

planting fig trees around a metropolitan area so when they finally compromise the underground infrastructure the workers will be covered in the fig trees UV reactant sap causing chemical burns! MWHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • *Edit* I am also a caretaker of locally sourced poison ivy and poison oak. Private access to public lands is my goal!

To chime in on Choss Chasins original post...Black has seen a very large increase in foot traffic due to its development. We just had the Idyllwild Climbers Alliance meetup and there was a good turn out for just the Black Mountain area. The wildlife manager in the area is aware of the increase in popularity and is working at getting up some signs to inform uninformed people of how to handle the outdoors ie. leave no trace. All we can do is be good stewards and role models.

The Black Mountain Bouldering Guide came out, this caused a large increase in use of the area. Unfortunately some of these new users don't give a shit about ethics, and preserving the area. Black Mountain has been one of my favorite areas to frequent for about 10 years. Its pretty sad how much it's changed in the last 2 years.

I too returned to BLack Mountain after almost a decade away. I was excited to take my young sons camping and bouldering for the first time there.

My GOD the tick marks were like an envasive species! There were tick marks on everything, including obvious holds. I understand wanting to tick a hold, but please brush it off when you're done! Rant over.
