Description

The Chilliwack Peaks could be thought of as north of the Northern Pickets. They are the glaciated and technical summits found north of Whatcom Pass, NCNP, and south of Chilliwack Lake, Canada. The major peaks of this range are Bear Mountain (7,931'), Mount Redoubt (8,969'), Twin Spires/Mox Peaks (8,404'/8,509'), and Mount Spickard (8,879').

Getting There

Each mountain has a unique approach. The shortest approaches for Bear, Redoubt, and Spickard start from Canada, using overgrown logging roads. For Bear Mountain, Americans often use Hannegan Pass to reach the Chilliwack River. Then, to avoid the brush of Bear Creek, cross-country via the west ridge of Bear Mtn. The East Face of the Southeast Twin Spire/Mox is best approached via Perry Creek and Ross Lake Resort shuttle. I used the Hannegan Pass-Whatcom Pass trail to reach an almost bush-free high traverse from Whatcom Pass to Bear Lake.

Pink is a high route I did to avoid the brush. The blue dot is where a rappel was made into the valley of Indian Creek. A giant notch blocked ridge travel there. There was enough brush that I waited out a day-long rain, instead of getting soaked. But nothing like the woods of Bear Creek, my exit route.

Purple dots show approximate climber routes for Mox and Bear.

Lime green for the Perry Creek bushwack.
