Description

Julia's Outcrop is a little sandstone cliff just above Chuckanut Drive. Discovering the cliff from my kayak whilst on a paddle, the outcrop got it's name from Julia Hanson, my lovely wife and partner in life. Some folks call this place Governor Lister Cliff a reference to the plaque on the large boulder at the start of the trail. Routes here are about 65ft high and overhang 10-15ft. The outcrop is dry year round.

When I left in 1998, I had created 11 bolted or mixed routes. Assuming this hardware has not been updated or replaced, beware. One person wrote "If the offwidth section of a trad route near Grog Supply were bolted it would make an interesting and technical line."

Getting There

Drive South on Chuckanut Drive from Bellingham. Proceed .2 miles past mile marker 12 around a sharp bend to a large parking area on the right. A large boulder will be plainly visible on the east (left) side of Chuckanut Drive.
Walk across Chuckanut Dr. to the boulder and hike up trail.

Meander up gullies crossing creeks over mossy old growth logs, then a few switchbacks and a mossy slab. The last bit near the cliff, pass under a large fallen tree. Turn left here to contour to the base. 15 minutes.

Be careful leaving your car here. People enjoy breaking windows and stealing valuables from cars left on Chuckanut (even in daylight hours).

There are some BAD anchors up there left over from when Jason Henrie and crew put most of the lines up in the early-mid 90s. That sandstone ain't the most solid in places either. With that in mind, there are a couple good ones under the roof there.

Sorry you are misinformed Ryan, but my dog Khumbu and I found the cliff and put up all those routes from 96-98.
