Bouldering just outside of Wanaka.


The city of Wanaka offers a number of sport climbing opportunites about 15km west of town in the Matukituki Valley. There are a large number of easy to access routes for the locals or visiting climbers. There is a wide range of climbing from 5.5 to 5.13. Check for seasonal closures, since the climbing areas are on pastoral lease land. The lambing season is from Oct 1 to November 15th.

Getting There 

Take the Matukituki Valley road west out of Wanaka for about 15km.

Shortcut to Exposure 5.9 5c 17 VI 17 HVS 5a  Oceania : New Zealand : ... : Roadside Area
This fully bolted chimney is an area classic. The climb is easy to spot from the road. At the top of the chimney, bypass the roof by turning the corner on the right and then traverse sharply to the right (5-10 meters) and slightly (5 meters) up to reach the 1st set of anchors with rap bolts.
