The second pitch of Western Grebe can be modified with a hard mantle thrown in. It is a nice move and definitely committing. Instead of traversing all the way left to avoid the roof. About 15 feet before the main route is a solitary bolt a-top a mini-flake. Do it, just do it!!

Not sure who added this bolt, but a fun variation! seems 10a to me...but I am 6'4 and it's harder for taller folks as your ass is just swinging out there a mile. An attentive belay will keep you off the slab if you pop. A weird bird for sure, but good.

This is a must do Var. if your going to go up the second pitch. One word: Awesome!
I've done it a few times now and I'd say it's at least in the mid 5.10ish range.
That mantle is way hard... Feels really insecure, and you'd deck if you were to blow the move standing up. Can't imagine doing it without the bolt. The rest of the route is really good.

Nathan is really good at A: Sandbagging or B: mantleing.
The mantle is 5.11 in the book.

The answer must be B (deduced by process of elimination).

5.11 in what book??
Though I see how this could be harder for taller folks.. Though I'm 6'. After getting on it once again (yes I like this mantle). Still can't say that it feels like 5.11. Hard 10...Sure.

Trizy, My bad. It says "hard mantle", it doesn't rate it in the book. Somehow I thought it was rated that though........... One thing is for sure it ain't no 5.9+ :)
