BETA PHOTO: Approaching Elvis' Hammer (middle) and Rhino's Hor...

Description

This 300' tower is not so desirable as the likes of Castleton or Washer Woman, but it is a remote desert challenge that is no giveaway. For the adventure climber, it will be a fantastic thrill. The 5.9 rating does not come easy and there are some moderate, but VERY scary moves on questionable rock with at least a 15 to 20 ft runout. This is not the best Navajo sandstone and is very soft in some places. Take this route very seriously, read my beta information closely, and be focused and prepared. Select the route for pitch by pitch details.

Getting There

Approach the tower from Sand Flats Road. It comes into view approximately 10 miles from Moab. It's located right of Elvis's Hammer and definitely looks like a rhino horn. You can also approach if you drive down the Sand Flats road from the La Sal Loop Road. It comes into view about a mile after a cattle guard if you're coming from the Loop Road.

Hike to the route from higher rather than lower in the basin. Don't start as high as you would to approach Elvis's Hammer though. The route starts off the ground at the western most edge of the tower where the horn first rises out of the ground, so keep this in mind as you approach.
