climbing HH

Description

This is a great place to beat the Southern Utah heat. At such an elevation, the temps rarely get above 80, and long sleeves and pants are welcome, even in July and August. The rock is welded tuff and offers climbs from 30' to 70'. Climbs range from 5.8 to 5.13, many of which can be top-roped allowing for some great opportunities to climb above your level. The rock is textured and can be quite sharp, especially in the many finger pockets littered on the routes. Lots of fun climbing exists here and is made all the better by the weather.

Getting There

From Cedar City, take Highway 14 East to Highway 148 (this is also the turn for Cedar Breaks National Monument). Drive through Cedar Breaks (no fee required if you're just driving through) and make a right (east) on Highway 143. Take Hwy. 143 for 4.7 miles to the Sydney Valley Rd (Forest Road 048). Make a Left (this road is easy to miss...there is a sign that reads "048"). Follow this dirt road for about 4.5 miles and there will be a small turnaround area on the left. This is the parking area. This is also a parking area for a nearby mountain bike trail.

Looking North, routes are to the West and East. The closest one (Willie the Pimp) is about a 3 minute walk to the East.

Before the "re-discovery" of the Overlook in the late 90's, the sport routes had a theme. It was some song sung by a 80's crooner. "As the song and dance begins, I smoke Winston cigarettes, smiling at the majorettes, wearing blue suede shoes, sitting next to Howard Hughes". Or something to that effect. Bob liked the song.
