I wanted to inform you guys that the Uscend Climbing club at the University of Utah will be climbing at the Slips from 3 to 7 pm on September 13th. There will be a lot of beginners and I want to warn you that a lot of the routes will be taken for top roping. Sorry if there is any inconvenience!
So if you show up at the cliff and there are already climbers there leading the routes, perhaps people who do not bother with reading MP, you have plans to take your large group of beginners elsewhere? The good thing about the Slips is that it is a quick 15 minute drive to Millcreek Momentum.
Gabby is trying to do the right thing by warning the climbing community that there will be a horde of n00bs at the slips on that time...
but taking over a crag like that can be really rude to others who want to share in what is a public resource, if it is done at the wrong place and time with the wrong attitude.
Gabby, I hope that along with how to tie in and TR belay you will help educate the new climbers in crag etiquette and courtesy:
(i.e., say 'rock' when something falls,
don't step on ropes/dogs & kids safe and under control,
don't talk too much when others are belaying,
don't hog routes, leader gets right of way,
etc...)
I think this stuff often gets glossed over or forgotten when people are learning to climb in large groups or in the gym.
Thanks for the heads up Gabby. The Slips is perfect for groups; there's usually always one there anyway. Have fun. (And if you know Gabby, you would know that there is no question that the group will be respectful of folks who may be there when they arrive, and that the newer climbers will be made aware of the community's norms.)
