This area has traditionally been called simply Embudo Canyon. It starts at the Rappel Wall entrance where the stream dries up, and ends at the Brachiation Rock. There are literally a couple hundred problems on both sides of the canyon, from the stream bed to high up the canyon sides.

The installation of the flood control dam in the late 70s was a game changer for Embudo all right. On the one hand it weeded out the staminally challenged ... no longer was it necessary to dodge the bullets fired by drunken paramilitary types from the parking lot below ... nowadays the only danger is of stepping in a dog turd on the trail up ... on the other hand it got harder to squeeze in a few hours of bouldering on weeknights after classes ... in some ways it was the end of an era ... Embudo had always been the virtual epicenter of training for Sandia hard men ... its decline coincided with the rise of the U Mound, emblem it would seem of the new era ...

Embudo Canyon remains a wonderful riparian habitat & plenty of people still visit, some even to boulder & toprope though not nearly like before ... for their sake & for (electronic) posterity I have taken the liberty of posting up a few photos of some of the major features of the canyon we once frequented....
