Sizing up the final crux

Description

The University Of California - Berkeley has several buildering problems throughout campus that are quite enjoyable. This is definitely NOT a destination area, but if you're on campus or close to campus, these problems are technical and quite an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Getting There

From SF: Head East on 80 over the bay bridge, and then take the 580W fork towards Berkeley / Sacramento. Exit University Ave, which is in a few miles. Take the left ramp to university, and head gently uphill for 2.5 miles or so. You'll run right into campus, there is more (not a lot when school's in session) parking on the streets on the north side of campus.

From Bart:
Take a Richmond train to downtown Berkeley. Walk East a block, you're on campus.

From the North Bay: Head south on the 580E to the University exit. Hang a left and cross over the freeway. Head gently uphill for 2.5 miles or so. You'll run right into campus, there is more (not a lot when school's in session) parking on the streets on the north side of campus.

From the South: Take whatever freeway gets you north to Berkeley, where you should end up on the 80E/580W along the bay just north of the MacArthur maze (the clusterf*ck of ramps / bridges by the bay bridge.) Exit University, which is about 2.5 miles north of the maze. Take the left ramp to university, and head gently uphill for 2.5 miles or so. You'll run right into campus, there is more (not a lot when school's in session) parking on the streets on the north side of campus.

This problem heads horizontally along the north facing corner system on the East (far uphill) part of the Doe Library, which is right in the middle of campus. The route starts on the left end of a system of outside and inside corners, at a point where a large straight wall full of pockets of windows ends, and a small foot rail and vertical 3" left blocked corner picks up, about 6' from the first outside corner, along a system of large 2' tall granite blocks. Traverse left to right all along t...[more]   Browse More Classics in CA
