I'm a fairly new climber that just completed a multi-pitch course in the cascades. I still have a long way to go in terms of rock climbing outdoors as I typically climb in the gym. I would like to find some top roping areas in and around the tri-state area. Specifically I'm looking for areas that I can build a top rope anchor without having to lead the climb so I can work on my skills without the added stress of leading a climb which I have little experience in. If anyone has any suggestion I would be very appreciative.
I live in the tri-state area. For Toproping I go to the Powerlines (Torne Valley) in Ramapo or Peterskill in the gunks. There are lots of single-pitch routes where you can easily and relatively safely access the top to set an anchor. Many of the routes are listed here on the route guide but for more detail the Rakkup app for Powerlines is good and for Peterskill, use the GunksApps Peterskill app.
I Live on Long Island but am always up for a road trip. I did look at the route database but didn't see much information on to my specific question (building a top rope anchor without leading a climb) I appreciate all the feed back from you all.
Goto the Powerlinez. Need free waver from Gravity Vault which you can get on the way up. Just about every climb there can be accessed with a simple walk to the top as the whole area is a series of tiers. As above, the Rakup app is awesome. No bolts in the area for anchors so make sure you have static webbing or rope to hit the trees and boulders.
Peterskill is custom made for toproping. Stay at the AAC campground and your set for an awesome weekend. There are a number of climbs to be toproped in the Trapps but are harder to find right off the bat.
Hope that helps. Be safe and study and practice in the backyard before your standing on the edge of a cliff. Don't use anything you are not 100% sure and confident about.
I'm in the same boat as you. Haven't tried Powerlinez yet, but I've been to Peterskill a few times. Lots of bolted routes that can be accessed by walk up. Takes some time to get oriented. Most of the maps of the area are not very helpful.
