I'll be heading to Thailand this winter and have heard rumors that a resort is being built in Tonsai? Wondering if anyone has any additional information and if the resort thing is true what effect it will have on the bungalow accommodations?
Unfortunately the rumors are true. I just got done spending a week there and the beachfront bars and cafes are being torn down as I write this. The great vibe and friendly local atmosphere are heading the way of the Dinosaur. Luckily all of the bungalows around the back side seem too be unaffected for the moment. The Cafes and the Sunset Pirate Bar are all being moved back up into the Jungle, but it just won't be the same... Best of luck too you!
Sounds like a sad day when the beachfront bars will be gone. But, they'll figure out how to keep the party alive! Someone should reopen Dum's Kitchen! The climbing won't change...or the climbing crowds won't change. Climb multi-pitch routes everyday to get away from the crowds and the slippery polish that now graces lots of the single pitch routes of Ton Sai... In 1999, we witnessed the village of Ton Sai being born. Big change to see a bull dozer plowing through the jungle... Bungalows were built everywhere. But, the beachfront bars and the Thais are what make/made up the special Ton Sai Vibe. It will be a sad day to see them go... We also witnessed Railey change dramatically and it's heart and soul has been tarnished by the "upgrade" of all the fancier($$) bungalows... They've been trying to snuff out the rustic-Thai-hippy scene for years... All we can do is deal with it and find the hidden heart and soul where it lies... 3 words for you Steve... Koh Yao Noi
