Yucca Crater

1. $30,000 to take the falsework from a lame art stunt in Canada and re-assemble it in Yucca Valley...hmm...

2. A "man made oasis and climbing structure that will also be a participatory artwork." With Joshua tree a few miles away, who the hell is going to go "climb" on this thing in the middle of nowhere? That "pool" should be a lot of fun after a week of stagnating in 110* heat...

3. They are putting the climbing holds on the wrong side of the structure! Clearly, no climbers were consulted in this plan.

4. Watch the video. Would you give your money to these douche bags?

Call me a philistine, but this looks more like an art boondoggle than a piece of landscape art. Some audacity, too; these jokers comparing themselves to Robert Smithson and Walter De Maria.

Rapping from the top of Cat in the hat

"Our project sits on an uninterrupted stretch of desert called Yucca Valley. This presents a unique opportunity to make an intervention on an unfettered landscape on a grand scale..."

Then they go on to talk about how green the project is because they are using materials left over from one of their other projects. Um...wouldn't the green thing to do be leaving the "unfettered landscape" alone instead of building a big ugly above ground swimming pool on it?

Haul Bag

I realize as a failed artist that has only sold a dozen paintings I may not be qualified as a critic but I see no reason for this. I think the idea of trying to combine the natural elements of the valley in a modern structure while giving a nod to the abandoned man-made landscape distracts the observer and tries to accomplish to many goals at once, failing on all accounts. You also have to behovering in the air to see the piece init's entirety. Agree that no one would want to climb a "towering" 24 foot bouldering wall right next to Josh for obvious reasons plus the interior walls are low angle, you solo over water on an overhang for a reason, to provide a soft fall. If you fell on this thing you'd hit every hold on your way down.

Trash from a previous project masquerading as art. The concept (is there really a concept here?) is weak. The execution is totally flawed. It is about as "green" as a Hummer. The artists seem to have no concept of what the desert really is and no connection with the pallet on which they want to create their art. I spent yesterday at the Phoenix Art Museum looking at some amazing pieces by Mexican Modernist. That is art. This is just a waste.

In short, this project gets a huge "F" from me.

Castleton Summit Sunset

The desert is so beautiful (stark as it is) that it doesn't need any artwork. This structure looks like a giant piece of abandoned trash.

The Cathedral Spires in RMNP, left to right: Stiletto, Sharkstooth, Forbidden Tower, Petit Grepon, The Saber, The Foil, The Moon & The Jackknife.

Only ten people can donate $2,500!? I can't donate fast enough.
