The Whale

The Whale is one of the roadside crags at the eastern end of the area.
The climbs are excellent.
This splended, clean granite cliff is about 350 ft. tall, with georgous, splitter cracks and lots of black knobs.
To descend, rappel from anchors at the summit.
I'll try to get some photos soon.

Getting There

To approach this crag, park at a dirt road on the north side of the Whitney Portal Road, across from Whitney Portal Campground. This is just before the Whitney Portal Road makes a switch back.
Walk this dirt road to a switchback, then follow a trail to the base of the cliff.
For more information on The Whale, get "The Good, The Great, And The Awesome" by Peter Croft.

Bony Fingers 5.11b R  CA : Sierra Eastside : ... : The Whale
Bony Fingers features an incredible 90m finger crack! If it weren't for the knobs, this steep, beautiful splitter would be 5.12 instead of 5.9. Located on "The Whale", approach by turning off of the main road to the right on a dirt road a little ways before the main road ends. This can only be followed for about 100 feet before a gate. Park here. Hike past the gate towards the east until the road appears to sharply switchback up and left (back to the west), and a secondary, lower, road cont...[more]   Browse More Classics in CA
