The south will rise again....at Shelf?

Sunday evening at Shelf a guy in a 1990's F350 was cruising around all the roads at Shelf flying a Confederate flag in the back of his pick up. This was a full size flag, the guy must have gone through the trouble of having a custom flag-mounting system installed in the truck bed.
We usually make a few trips out to Shelf a year and we've seen this guy a couple times. He never shows up on a crowded friday or saturday night and he always cruises through at 30 mph, not stopping and makes the whole loop, through the Sand Gulch campground, down to the lower parking, up to the Bank, and out.
Anyone know this guys story or seen him before? It seems like he's just trying to mark his territory but this is the kind of crazy that creeps me out and its not unusual for my wife and I to have the place to ourselves midweek.

Shelf is close to Canon City, mystery solved.

Odds are you're white. You'll be ok.

By the way, if you've never seen him before how do you know he hasn't shown up on Fridays or Saturday's?

Make it out there a few times a year. Work schedule is so that every few weeks we get 5 days off that are centered around a weekend, so if we're lucky we'll show up Thursday and leave Monday. We always see him when if we're not alone out there, maybe 1 or 2 other sites will be occupied. As much as I love Shelf, theres something a little creepy being at the campground, by yourself 10 miles from supermax prisons.

Tim, have we met? How did you know I'd be a white male on MP? I may be white, but I do have a Tacoma, just a reason for him to pick a fight.
I'm not worried he'll come after me, but like I said, that kind of crazy just creeps me out.

Shelf backs up into a series of forest roads that four wheelers use.

I'd guess your CSA acquaintance is going up there to do some off roading, and it doesn't have anything to do with you.

People have called me psychic. I'm sensing you won't be attacked for driving a Tacoma.

Sounds like he doesn't leave the Denver-Boulder corridor. Outside of that, CO is pretty much a full on redneck cowboy state that I'm happy to call home.

Jon H, if you call this state home you should learn that just because people live in CO doesn't mean that they live in Boulder or Denver, or anywhere in the Front Range for that matter. I know it's hard to believe, especially when reading MP.
I wasn't trying to start a pissing contest about who's seen the biggest redneck or who lives in the biggest redneck state, I was just curious if anyone's had any run-ins with the guy. I have certainly seen bigger and more blatant displays of racism, but I still think it takes a little effort to mount a 6'x8' flag on the back of your truck.
Next time I'll stick to the basics and ask how to build a platform in the back of my Tacoma.

We moved from Boulder, CO to North Carolina last year. Definitely a bit of culture shock. Southerners have a deeper sense of pride in their ancestors and history than other Americans I have met in the past. I have a friend that likes to recount that his great-great-grand-dad (not sure on how many greats there) fought on the confederate side. Likewise, civil war reenactments are a big deal down here. There are actually people that fly the confederate flag out of some sort of historic pride. Not saying that there aren't douchebags that fly it for other reasons including hate, but some people relate to it... A lot of people are offended that states have had to remove the confederate flag. They feel that 'PC culture' is robbing them of their right to celebrate their history and their ancestors. It is a shame that the flag is used as a symbol of hate.

That said, Canon City is about as white and redneck as it comes, so the guy may just be preaching to the choir, and/or trying to get a rise out of 'PC front range types' out for a weekend of fun. Based on the OP, he has won!

I seriously doubt this person will cause any harm...

Have tried talking to him? I know that seems absurd, but you may learn what his deal is.
Maybe not plausible since he's driving through but perhaps worth the effort. It will either put your mind at ease or confirm that you need to be concerned.

Shelf can be a weird place. A couple of years ago we witnessed a redneck fight in the free BLM sites. After lots of shouting and pushing, one sped away in his truck, hit a tree, tore off his oil pan, and kept going. We did find a free flashlight and pocket knife in the aftermath though. Score! There was also someone target shooting off the Bank road recently (a big no no), but that could have been a climber.

It's America fly what you want where you want to. But be prepared for the consequences. fox13now.com/2015/11/02/fig…

oh god cannot we please not start another PC culture because someone offended you with their flag. Are your feelings okay?

Last time I checked this was america and you can fly whatever flag you want. If you and your pansy wife get scared go back to boulder. Or get a gun, then you and the redneck can become best friends

Big deal. If someone wants to parade the fact that they are a bigot stuck in the past, I guess that's their right. Don't get all freaked out about it. You'll be fine. I'd worry more about the erosion of the road from his tires.

climbing friend,

defending yourself from predatory rednecks with bulletproof vests, your melee weapons, and your bulging muscles is as much a part of climbing outdoor as is the make bold flash!

Let's just hope that bully doesn't see the "anatomy of a climber" poster, cause then you'll for sure get your lunch money stolen.

Yeah Jon H has definitely been in the bubble too long if everyone outside Denver and Boulder is a red neck. If by red neck, you mean non-yuppie, then I agree with you.
Get out and explore other "cultures" lol.

Profiling and discrimination kind of sucks.
