BETA PHOTO: A view of The Palisades from the road.
Description
The Palisades are a tilted section of limestone formations that strike along the mountains outside of Red Lodge, MT. Noticeable from a distance, these cliffs provide a good close-to-town warmup before heading off to greater adventures and epics in the backcountry.
There are 4-5 nicely placed sport routes evenly distributed across the cliffs close to Ski Run Road. Routes range from 5.5 - 5.7+ across dolomite and limestone spires and sawteeth.
Pretty soft rock but well bolted, stick to grayer stone for more stability (grayness is associated with dolomite).
Get local beta on whether any are down for servicing at the Beartooth Ranger Station or Beartooth Mountain Guides .
Getting There
From downtown Red Lodge take Route 212 south to Ski Run Road (road sign says West Fork Road) or follow the signs towards Red Lodge Mountain Ski Resort. Drive ~3 miles southwest to where Ski Run Road and West Fork Road fork.
Stay with Ski run road and park on the left shoulder or back at the overlook just down the road.
Approach is less than 15 mins and within sight of the vehicles.
Judging by the amount of rope we had left, these routes are closer to the 70-75 ft range. The anchors at the top are regular bolt hangers. Since it is an easy walk off, you may set up a top rope from these anchors.
