Down and left of the Lower Cliff, there are some random boulders strewn about. The class of the area is The Outlier Boulder itself, as it's clearly the biggest boulder. There are other, smaller boulders nearby that might have some problems, but this area has nowhere near the density of the Hive and Skyfall.

Getting There

From the Lower Cliff, hike left and slightly downhill. You'll see the big Outlier Boulder after less than five minutes. Random potential exists all around.

Rock Climbing Photo: The start of Variance

Variance V4 6B  NH : WM: Waterville Valley : ... : The Outlier Boulder
Variance climbs the left arete on the steep face of The Outlier Boulder. Because it actually has holds, albeit small ones, Variance doesn't climb like many of the aretes in the area. Start with a left hand sidepull and stand up on a pretty good left foot. Work your way up the arete by using small crimpers for your hands and hard foot movements. The difficulty eases when you get both feet on the less-steep face. ...[more]   Browse More Classics in NH
