Description

The Northern Group encompasses a series of formations that are home to classics like Kachoong (10c) and A Taste of Honey (10d). There are many other more difficult lines of high quality there as well.

Getting There

The area can be approached from below via a long hike, but it is more easily approached via the summit road. Follow this to a car pack at the end, skirt the gate and continue on the the cliff edge. A steep scramble or easy rappel leads to the base of the more popular climbs. Some routes start from various points in this gully.

Kachoong!

Kachoong 5.10c 6b 20 VII 20 E2 5b  Australia : Mount Arapiles : The Northern Group
Kachoong is Arapiles' quintessential roof climb and perhaps the most photographed climb on the continent. Supposedly the name comes from the sound the rope makes if one falls from the crux... Descend the gully and climb up the very steep, reachy orange wall to gain a decent stance under the roof. Take a breath and punch it out the flake to the lip, over, and up.The best light is at sunrise, and, of course, there is a perfect photographer's ledge just across from the crux....[more]   Browse More Classics in International
