Description

A granite alcove at the west end of the Shoshone Canyon. Mostly sport climbing with several trad routes thrown in for good measure. There are about 30 routes with grades ranging from 5.6 to 5.12+. The ground is flat so belaying and spreading out is easy. Other than the walk along the highway to get there, this is a kid friendly site.

Getting There

Drive west from Cody into the Shoshone Canyon and park on the right before the entrance to the first short tunnel. A five minute walk west through the two short tunnels is a bit harrowing with cars whipping by on the highway a few feet from your head, but over with quick.

Big Ben 5.10d 6b+ 21 VII+ E3 5b  WY : Cody : The Island
Cruise up the jet black basalt blocky start to enter the big 'V' feature. Stem your way up the V to the reddish orange rock to find the crux and very sustained climbing for about 30 feet. There is a great rest before the angle slackens and the bolts spread apart. Smaller edges and tetchy climbing deposit you on top of the Island. Perhaps the longest single pitch at the Island. This climb was originally established by Ben Franklin, a Cody local back in the 80's and early 90's.
