The Crystals are a 5-10 minute walk west of Camp 4. If you tire of the crowds and glassy footholds of the C4 circuit and want some more variety, then this is a great place to check out. It’s not a large area, but you will find a handful of quality problems at each level of difficulty.

Most of the established problems are located on or around the Castle – an enormous block sitting adjacent to the trail. The side facing the trail has a couple highball V-desperates and is sometimes surrounded by a pond of water (the moat). The backside of the Castle is characterized by a multitude of embedded quartz crystals from which the area draws its name. Here you will find several good problems from V2-V4 on unique rock. This small cluster of boulders is all that is included in the current guidebooks, however there is more developed bouldering to be found just a bit further west and on the north side of the trail.

Getting There

It is best to just park at Camp 4 and walk west along the horse trail (Valley Floor Loop trail), otherwise you will have to drive the loop. If you are heading out of the Park anyways, then you can drive down a short ways and park at a small pullout on the right, near the boulders.

Rock Climbing Photo: Stretching for the high crimp

Pride V9 7C  CA : Yosemite National Park : ... : Pride Boulder
Balance up the sloping foot ledge to a decent side pull, and a loooong reach to another decent crimp. Paste your feet a bit higher and jump to the lip. You may want to walk up the back, just to confirm that there really aren't any other holds to grab....[more]   Browse More Classics in CA
