The Creature, Joshua Tree NP

Description 

This uniquely shaped formation is just off the trail on the way to the Astro Domes and, depending upon your inclinations, looks like a variety of creatures.

One route, the aptly named Monster Hole (5.10b), exists on the formation and involves some interesting moves that are rarely found on a route, even at Joshua Tree.

Getting There 

Hike the Wonderland Wash to a point about 200 yards past the Bankrupt Wall where the distinctive shape of the formation will be seen on the right (east) side of the trail.

Monster Hole 5.10b  CA : Joshua Tree National Park : ... : The Creature

Start this unique route on the east face, at a recess in the rock. Climb up a crack and then sling the "monster hole" for protection. Grab the hole, swing around onto the south face and then stuff a leg into the hole which enables you to clip a bolt above the hole. The crux (5.10b or thereabouts) is exiting the hole, which is quite awkward and somewhat bizarre, but once stood up a short bit of friction (5.9) leads to the spacious summit.
