BETA PHOTO: Looking at The Bypass upon arriving from the hike ...

Description

The Bypass is a small sport climbing area located 10 minutes from White Salmon, WA. There are 13 leadable routes with a few additional top rope variations.
Routes include a 5.7, two 5.9's, four 5.10's, five 5.11's, and one 5.12 (with two variations of this route: Smirk, 5.12a, and Sh*t Eatin' Grin, 5.12b)
Definitely a local training area and probably not worth driving very far to climb at, but none the less a great place to get a regular after-work burn, and have lots of fun while you're at it.

This crag has a local group of around 40 people who use it regularly, and have been in the process of cleaning up the area, and working on trail maintenance to keep our access open.
Like many climbing areas, The Bypass has had a sad history of being abused by local non-climbers who see a cliff as a convenient place to dispose of their trash. Some people say they will never climb at this crag because of the garbage that was present when it was first discovered. Fortunately, there is a dedicated group of climbers who believe in taking responsibility for local recreational resources. We have taken the extra effort to clean up this beautiful area so there is a nice, convenient climbing area for all climbers to enjoy.
A lot was done during the last 10 years to make this crag better, like trail improvement & area clean-up. We will be having a Crag Clean-Up / Trail Maintenance Hoedown in Spring... email me if you want to be involved.

Sounds like a nice little crag. I'll check it out the next time I'm in the Hood River area.

Hey Peter,
It would be nice to have you come check out the crag!
Get in touch before your next trip to the Gorge.

Does anyone have any beta on how to get there? Never heard back from Elmo when I emailed. I am new to Hood River and looking for some spots close to town.

Thanks
