Is it recommended to reserve accommodations in Railay prior to arrival, or to find a place when you get there? I'll be there from Dec 22nd to Jan 4th if that makes any difference. Is there any chance that there will be no vacancies if I just show up without a reservation?

high season......

You may be out of luck or have to stay in Ao-Nang

That time of year you should make a reservation or be prepared to take anything that's available, sometimes paying double or triple what you should.

Thanks guys. Amazingly I was able to make reservations at The Viewpoint. A bit more expensive than the rumors I've heard, but reasonable. Spoke to staff on the phone and they were very helpful.

Just got back yesterday and there seemed to be plenty of vacancy in both Tonsai (where we stayed) and Railay, but we didn't do too much checking on Railay so you may want to reserve at least a handful of your first nights. Good luck!
