Access Issue: Loose Rock!
Details
Warning: much of the climbing at Guernsey State Park is on fractured or otherwise unsound rock and is protected by home-made anchors and bolts. Exercise extreme caution when climbing here: holds and bolt placements that appear sturdy may not be.
Description
The Switchbax Power Tower Wall is on the right side of the river 1/3 mile below the Guernsey Dam when going downstream. It is just west of and across the river from the private residence which is just south of the White Grotto Wall.
Getting There
Foot traffic only access to Switchback Power Tower Wall and the river bottom is gained by passing through the park residence quarters on a paved road leaving east from Park Headquarters. Park Headquarters is on the left (west) side of Rd 317 and abuts the road closure barricade.
After passing some big parked garbage hauling trucks on the left and north of the residences take the gravel-rocky 2-track left that switchbacks down to the river bottom. At the first switch back going downhill there is a steep descent trail leaving southward of the south steel power pole. The trail follow the rim for 150 feet south and then descends east through the top rock formation and then slopes downward to the north. See photo for this path.
Or one can follow the 2-track switch back road to the river and walk downstream on the river bank when the river is flowing full to the wall below the power tower Poles.
