Sun Drop Tower summit.

Description

A square detached pillar roughly 10 feet from the main cliffline. The side facing the cliff is about 25 feet high. A couple of easy trad leads or solo get you up. Topropes can be set up with nuts and hexes in a finger sized crack splitting the top of the tower.

Getting There

From the main parking lot take the first trail left up towards the old quarry. At the cliffline before entering the quarry turn left and follow a trail for a short distance. Easy bushwhacking along the cliff for another 100 feet leads to the tower.

Burnt-Out Candle

Burnt-Out Candle 5.5  MN : Blue Mounds SP (Luverne) : ... : Sun Drop II Tower
This is the easiest way to the top of the tower. Start in the dihedral and gain the big ledge. At this point you can comfortably plug in some bomber gear to protect the 5.5 face move if you want. Be aware of cranking too hard on the crack and jug near the crux since they are part of a detached block (can be seen at the bottom of the main photo.) Once past the crux, head up easy terrain to the summit....[more]   Browse More Classics in MN

Anyone have any beta on how they got down off of this thing?

You could do a "Needles style two person rappel" or just downclimb the 5.5 route...I'd say it's probably not even that hard. Several years ago I did find bail gear on top (2 nuts, a sling and biners).

Thanks for the info Doug. FYI: there is no longer bail gear on top.

It is said that someone set up and walked a highline between Sun Drop II Tower and the main wall...
