Storing Ropes for Winter

What is the best way to store ropes for the winter? Currently I only climb on rock, so my rope is likely going to be unused until next spring. In the past, I've just put them (fully dried) in rope bags in a closet, but I want to hear others' opinions. Is it better to leave them in a bag or hanging on a pegboard? How do you store yours?

Watching this thread. I'm considering putting up a pegboard in my garage, but in I'm in Texas, and we get over 100 degrees a lot during the summer. Wondering if that might have any negative effect on gear.

Flaked or coiled in your rope bag is fine. Closet stored. I prefer sealing my gear in rubbermaid containers to keep creatures out. I once opened an equipment storage room where cords were left hanging on pegboard in the off season and found mice nesting in the ropes. They had eaten through the sheath and into core strands and used the fibers for bedding.

Chase, I grew up climbing in Austin and would not recommend storing your climbing gear in your garage. Or in your car! The soles will melt right off your shoes if you leave 'em trapped in there.

Awesome Dylan, thanks for the insight. I might pick up a Rubbermaid bin one of these days to just drop everything in and slide under a bed, in a closet, garage, etc...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
